My d’Uccle hatched a day early (day 20) and the membrane is drying out. I helped make the space where it can breathe bigger and I put some coconut oil on the membrane to soften it.

Do I just leave the chick and just keep adding coconut oil when it drys out again? Any other tips?

I have had couple of chicks got shrink wrapped, I’ve never used coconut oil or any thing like that. I just used warm water pretty quickly assist to get their head out if possible as long as no veins on the way that might cause bleeding and let them finish hatching on their own. In the first place was it in the incubator pipping over 12 hours. Was there more eggs in there, that might get affected by opening - closing, temp and humidity fluctuations?

Do you think that the opening is good enough? I’m not the most experienced person with assisted hatching and if I kill it I’d feel terrible.

It was under a broody and yes I have to keep lifting her up to get the chicks.
