I have an update: The veins are draining from baby #3, and it looks like it'll be ready to hatch soon! It's going to need a lot of help out of the shell but it's still hanging in there and I'm cautiously optimistic.

I guess I had no real baseline for comparison 'cuz Wobbles was soooo weak when he first came out, but I love how fiesty she is! Her voice is much higher pitched than Wobs' was, too. Odd.

Oh, and we finally came to a mutual decision for the name! Ladies and gents, meet ...Milkshake. <3
Aaaah, that is a sweet name. And it's unique too. If she's this feisty now, will it carry over into her adulthood?

Oh, man. Wow. Great news.

No, we hatch our own birds, so there are always extra roosters growing out that we don't need for breeding. We butcher several times per year to remove the extras & fill the freezer. I keep roos with heavy bodies & gentle temperaments who protect their hens. But there are always extras & always new ones growing out with better potential for breeding, so if a rooster makes it past about 9 months old around here then he has good breeding potential. If he makes it to 18 months he's a very good breeder & if he makes it past 2 years he is awesome. Hens get sold off if they are not what I'm specifically looking for, but I always allow the kids each 1 special hen who gets to stay regardless of her physical qualities as long as she is friendly to people & the rest of the flock.
Do hens normally live longer than roosters?

Milkshake is an awesome name for a ducklette.
