Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

seriously mine are vicious i wish that i had gotten all of mine at once but the colors werent all avaliable when they needed to be so they are all in different groups and everytime they go together there are major fights and its just been really stressful because the grey call ducks absoluetly HATE the snowy ones and the grey ones will leave the magpie call duck alone but if he gets near the grey calls they nip at him and then one snowy call duck only wants to be around the magpie but the other one attacks him constantly. So its just all one big mess

I'm sorry to hear they've been so stressful for you. Hopefully they will get it all figured out without anyone getting hurt. I have a similar situation with my pekins and pilgrims. They are getting better though. SLOWLY. For me it doesn't really matter if they get along now or not being I will have to seperate them later anyway once the ganders come into their first breeding season. Can't have them trying to breed my poor pekin girl. So I mostly seperate them anyway. Your calls are pretty young still, aren't they?

yes they are young but old enough to fly now but the greys are the oldest and just finishing their adult feather molt.

You should contact Gentila, he's been through this and would have some tips on how to get your flock to get along better. I know you rather rushed into the whole call duck thing, so I can see why you're overwhelmed. HAve you thought of rehoming one or two of the troublemakers for the sake of keeping the peace? If you're having a bunch of injured ducks, that's no bueno. :/

I would LOVE to have wobbeans running around considering they are two of my favorite call ducks! The only problem with eggs is that I have no clue what I'm doing. I've read calls are hard to hatch as well. I would be heartbroken if one or worse non made it. I get so emotionally invested in my animals... Thank you for offering and maybe by spring I may change my mind and give it a try... The funny part about this is that it's your little ducks that make me want some!

Hey, if a dummy like me can do it, I know you can! I lost all my eggs my first attempt cuz I got a cheap bator and had only researched non-call duck specific hatching guides. I was clueless. But then I got a lovely Rcom mini and discovered BYC, and ever since I've had 100% incubation rate, and a 75% hatch rate. Not too shabby for show quality calls, eh?

I'll for sure to keep you all posted when Bean finally, er...becomes a woman, to put it politely.

I'm tickled that you love Wobbean so much, and it'd sure be an honor to have you raise their eggs!

Yeah, I'm thinking that would be pretty neat... And yes, please keep us posted about Beans "womenhood." :)

I showed the hubby the video you posted of Wobbles and Bean on the other thread and he's sold on getting some. He too is in love with your ducks, but than again who isn't?!

Quote: will do :) thanks

Amy i did prepare and research on them for 3 years i also got all of my numbers down i dont think there was any rushing to get them.

i couldnt think of rehoming any of them especially because i will be getting more i plan to have at least one of every color also rehomeing them would be like getting rid of a child would you rehome wobbels

by injur i mean pull out some feathers ( thats what i consider a major fight) and basicly its just one runs after the other and they do that back and forth at each other

I thought you lost your first flock? Maybe I'm misremembering things, sorry. I still say PM Gentila..er, I mean Tevye's Dad, for tips on how to socialize the buggers together. H had two practically feral ducks and successfully integrated them in with a buncha ducklings.

Errrr. Yup. Boy I didn't pull off any miracles, but the best thing I think is to have them separated, but in view of each other and in close proximity. Like with plastic chicken wire between them. That way if one decides to lay against the wire and another one decides to peck the first, it can happen (pecking order can be established), but several ducks can't gang up and seriously injure another. If they see each other for several days or even weeks up close they will communicate enough that the "stranger danger" impulses will turn off. This doesn't mean they would get along, but the chance of them being very violent is much lower. I still have one hormonal drake (Kaine) that needs to chase two of my ducks and my other drake at least 10 times each every day

I separate him sometimes to give everyone a break. He doesn't necessarily do any thing directly any more, but for example, he chased Tevye one day and Tevye plowed over Dove trying to get away. Dove ended up limping for 3 or 4 days so it is hard on the whole flock. He is starting to mellow a little bit as this season is winding down. I am giving him until next spring and if he is as bad next year as he was this year, he will probably get rehomed. It would be a shame though because he is actually a very good flock leader otherwise, he is just wound up a bit too tight.
