Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

She's close to 5 months. Her hatch day was between the 15th and the 19th, we don't have an exact date. Still early, but I dunno how else to interpret her behavior! She showed all the signs: head down, soft chirps, didn't protest when he climbed on top of her, despite the fact that he comically went tumbling off about two seconds afterward...

Well, he's new at it, I think. He hasn't ever mated before with a duck other than her, right? They're clumsy when they get started, and sometimes even afterward. We have a tiny 21 ounce drake that's 1.5 years old, and he still hasn't quite gotten the hang of it.

Edited to correct a missing space between sentences.

LOL! Oh man, I can see that being Wobbles. I hope not, but...yeah, I can totally see that being Wobbles. :p

He hasn't mated with another duck before Bean, right? Another thing is that the females will sometimes flip them off or position so the mating isn't successful. She just seems young to me to want to be mating. I have a little boy from this year following one specific little girl around and she actually shakes her head at him. She seems to like another little boy, who seems to have no interest in her and has his eye on another little girl. Sheesh.

My calls have summoned in a breeding pair of pacific black ducks. My calls don't seem to mind having the wild ducks around and the wild ducks are staying separate from the flock I expect they'll nest with us as they have been here a week now and once their young get eaten by the local cats take off unless I can drop a chicken tractor over the female while she's nesting to protect them, still it might drive her bonkers. Anyone want to weigh in on if I should attempt to protect the wild duck/ducklings the way I would my call mums and bubs or not?

I hate the idea of cats getting the wild babies. And the idea of wild mama possibly going nuts under the chicken tractor, too. Hard decision to make. My emotional brain says, yes for her and their protection and my objective brain says to leave her alone. Scale is tipping toward emotional brain. Sorry for long answer but this is a provocative issue.

Hey, Bean's doing that weird thing again. She's laying down by the water cup, not moving, all flattened and making the strangest chirping noises. ...Aaaaand then Wobbles tried to mount her and failed spectacularly. You don't think they're...do you? Is she actually ready?
Amykins, she is pancaking there.

That it is, it's why I though I'd ask for advice, perhaps other people have been through the same thing.
