Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Pics
They're cute! I would consider them pet quality..and yes, $10.00 is a great deal...however, be careful about people offering something so cheap. There may be a reason that they want to basically give them away like that.

I'd like to start breeding call ducks but I don't know where to start lol. How much different are they compared to chickens? How loud are they compared to guineas? Can I feed them the same food as my chickens? I can't incubate duck and chicken eggs together can I?

Call ducks make amazing and comical little pets. The drake is a relatively quiet bird and their call is hardly noticeable, but the hens are LOUD...some hens are louder than others but all hens make a loud call, especially when they want something. They don't normally just go around making noise all day but when they want to be heard, they will be! Some people do feed their waterfowl the same layer pellets and cracked corn that they feed to their chickens, but I recommend feeding Mazuri Waterfowl feed to any and all waterfowl. I have on occasion incubated duck eggs and chicken eggs in the same incubator, but I don't recommend it. Most people advise cooling and misting waterfowl eggs which will kill your chicken eggs so it's really better to have a separate incubator for the ducks if you can. Call duck eggs are notoriously difficult to incubate and hatch ESPECIALLY if your eggs come from good quality adults. Be prepared for a lot of disappointment and sadness until you find your groove. The only similarities I can think of to chickens is that they're very social animals, they can be trained to go to a coop at night, they generally stay around the house/home, and they can be quite entertaining. Oh AND people swear that duck eggs are the best for baking! Call ducks are excellent flyers too btw so some people do clip at least one wing...others would rather they be able to fly to escape predators.

OH MY GOODNESS!! I'm in heaven! Loving everyone's babies

what makes them pet quality? Sorry I know nothing about ducks. She's selling 4 pairs, because shes just getting out of ducks and needs them gone, but I like this coloring lol

I haven't owned mine very long but i will say social is an understatement! i have raised a lot of ducklings, mind you all Muscovy and these calls win the prize for demanding, they will yell at the top of their lungs for attention, and love, love.. love being near/around their people.

We went 'gardening' yesterday, i can honestly say i have never had two ducklings garden with me before nor need too, they barely took their eyes off me lol always ensuring i was in eyesight and all was well. Whether it's just my pair who knows, but that is my 2 cents at the moment.

Their avid swimmers too, ours take tubbies in the bath and they dive and paddle about just like any duck would, i hear they fly well too and the ducks are loud(mind you if the calls they do now is any indication, i'll believe it lol)

I do know size is what makes them worth money, colour likely comes into as well but many are too big, which leans them to pet quality. Their also quite hard to get and as wee ones hard to hatch and delicate for the first day(as per Storey's guide) however after that their considered hardy and very good pets.

These are my two, their not 2wks old yet... I call them the" tic-tacs" for now, until sex has been determined, then names will follow.

Hello all. I am wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that I can begin my search in getting my hands on some call ducks? My dad is sort of showing some interest in wanting to make a little pond habitat thing for them & I wanted to start browsing around to see if I can locate somewhere that has a good rep for these little guys. :)

I don't have a set age, really not sure what my dad is after. I'm thinking probably nothing that is a baby. But, I could be wrong.
Local would be okay as well. I am in East TN. I hope this is okay to post a searching post here....

I'm in East TN as well...although I won't have any older birds to sell until later this Summer or into Fall. I raise Calls in Buff, Khaki, Penciled, and Lavender Bibbed....the Penciled and Lavenders are projects and have the potential of producing a couple of other interesting colors as well and the buff and khaki's come from great SQ lines and should produce some really nice offspring. You can PM me if you're interested in anything.

I just got my first call duck as an orphan and instantly fell in love. My girls show in 4H and APA shows in the jr. division and I am starting to show chickens in the older division. My husband decided that our new little guy/girl needs some friends. He figured if we are going to get some we need to get some that are show quality so they will also be dual purpose. Does anyone have any for sale? I am new to these little guys and want to know everything there is to know about them.
