Daddy's chick

In my experience, a week shouldn't matter that much, although I would keep an eye on them if one chick -- because of its breed -- is significantly larger.

Chickens are flock creatures and are generally happier when there is more than one However, if you CAN'T get a buddy for your baby, I have raised a lone chicken. She was given to me in the fall, wasn't fully feathered until it was way too cold to move outside and had been traumatized at the feed store where they housed her with a bunch of bigger, more aggressive broiler chicks who made her hide under the feeder.

Dottie continues -- at 2 years old -- to live indoors in a big wire dog crate. Weather permitting, she spends her days outdoors but has very little interaction with the flock. She does, however, like the terrier and the cat that live in the house and will settle down on the sofa with all of us.

BTW, I LOVE that you decided to spend the night on the couch with your beautiful baby! Good luck raising her.

Awwww.... I love Dottie already!

I've thought about making my lone chick Bryony a house chicken, but she's just too flighty. The poor thing is a wreck. She holds her own, but she's just a little... off. I blame myself for not following others' advice. If Bryony ever goes broody, I will DEFINITELY give her a couple of chicks to raise. But she's so weird, I don't think she'll ever go broody. If she did, I don't know that she'd be a great mom. I'd probably end up brooding any chicks I gave her indoors or giving them to one of my perpetually broody Silkies.
