Dads old sayings

He actually came home today, doing much better. He had a whole lot of gallstones in his pancreas, that caused pancreatitis. The pain was really bad, and he was having problems breathing, we had no clue what it was. Thank goodness it was not his heart! They got them all out, but says he needs the gallbladder out in the next few weeks. Thank you for asking.

Lordy, I'd need a book to get all of my dad's down! But these are my favorites, although I have a feeling I'll be "starred" on one of them!

When one of us would accomplish something big but feel weird about bragging it up: "He who doth not tooteth his own horn oft doth not getteth his horn tootethed."

When one of us wanted to do something so badly we could taste it, and were waiting for his permission...this is what we'd hear if we misbehaved during that wait: "You're p***ing in your path of progress!"

When we'd think we knew it all about something: "Be smart enough to know how smart you ain't - then you can begin to get an education."

And the family classic: Dad would be in the kitchen and we'd suddenly hear, "THUMP, THUMP". It was a ritual, and we knew it all well. So one of us would ask, "Dad, what are you doing?" He'd reply, "Beating my head against the wall." Following the script, one of us would then ask, "Why?" And he'd reply, "Because it feels to good when I quit." That exchange meant that one of us - or all of us - had failed or forgotten to get one of our regular chores done and rather than remind us for the millionth time he'd let us know that getting through to us was like beating his head against the wall. Five kids would then be scrambling to double check and make sure we weren't the one one who had caused his "headache".

LOL Blooie those are great!!! Thank you for sharing them!! I wonder if that last one would work on my kiddos!

It sure worked on us....and on my kids! I thought of another after I hit the "submit" button.

Dad was never big on hugs and open showing of emotion. But he was concerned if one of us got hurt - UNLESS that hurt was caused by us doing something we weren't supposed to be doing. I felt a surge of pride when our daughter and 9 year old grandson were here recently. Evan was out swinging the big stick Tam had told him earlier to put down. Well, he whacked himself in the face with it, and came in the house with a bloody little cut on his nose.

Tam, as she's checking it and cleaning off the blood: "Evan, what happened?"
Evan: "I was swinging the stick and when it hit the tree it bounced back and hit me."
Tam puts down the paper towel (after making sure it was just a little nick) "Well Evan..."
Evan hangs his little head down, sighs dramatically and says, "I know, you have no sympathy for stupidity." Ah, Tam. Grampa would be proud to hear his words still being used by another generation!

What a great story! It does feel really great when traditions are passed down, and you know they sunk in! I bet your grandpa is really proud!
