One of my Runners is setting! She's the 1st of 9 to show any maternal urges (they are 16 months old). I am reading of mixed experiences: separate her from the others, separate her from the drakes (3), when to separate her, leave her be . . . this is day 1 so I'm preparing a separate area for her to raise the ducklings safely from the other ducks. Is this usually needed? From what I gather, Runners are not the most protective moms. Assuming she hatches some babies, how long will they need to be separated from the rest of the flock? If I give them mash instead of poultry pellets, won't Mom eat it all 1st? I don't know how many eggs are under her - I don't want to disturb her but at some point I'll have to check their viability. Should she have water and food close to her or will she go to the watering and feeding stations enough to meet her needs? I'm kind of excited but mostly anxious at this point. Advice appreciated. I'm reading Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks but still have questions. Thanks

One worry at a time mate!

They usually appreciate a secluded nesting area - if she has chosen a spot, then she likes it, I fixed a board across a corner of my shed with a little door in it and thats where my broodys go. At the moment, just let her sit for 2 weeks and see how it goes. She might not sit them or they might be no good. Id attempt to make her area a bit private if you can do it without disturbing her.

Ive got one sitting right now - 2 weeks into autumn, great - and in another week I will candle the eggs and check. Shes got 4 in there and is keeping the nest very clean. She comes out once a day for food, water and walk and then back in to sit which is perfect. If I see anything encouraging at 2 weeks then I will start doing checks throughout the day at 3 and 4 weeks. I would prefer to move her into my laundry - warmer and better protected for little ones - but if she manages to get fertile eggs to 3 weeks Im not prepared to move her. Ive had too many false starts where even fertilized and growing eggs die at 3 weeks. So, if I see signs of pipping and live ducklings at 3-4 weeks, then I will move her to a secure location. I dont see the piont in disturbing her before that, and I refuse to get excited after 2 years of no ducklings!
