Hi all,

Given a temporary (hopefully) change in our flocks roaming space, they do not have access to grass all the time. We only have 6 hens and they are laying normally since the change over a month ago. They only get about 2-3 hours of grass roaming a day and, naturally, all greens in the run are non-existent. Their egg yolk has also gone from a golden/dark yellow to a pale yellow recently.

Since the grass restriction, I have been supplementing with more greens - mainly kale, broccoli - as well as some red cabbage, acorn and butternut squash. We got the hens back on Purina Layena pellets (had issues finding it locally) about a week ago.

How much veggies is too much? About how much should each hen get a day? It seems silly to ask this but too much isnt always a good thing.

My Hens only get to Free Range an hour before sunset daily, weather permitting.
I don't give them veggies or kitchen scraps, I buy frozen veggies ready to cook so the only kitchen scraps are skins from onions and garlic.

During winter season I give them a slab of Alfalfa hay once or twice weekly.

The Layena should have Marigold extract in the ingredients to give the eggs a nice orange color.
BUT it should make up the vast majority of their diet, as there is just enough to add color.
Make sure they are eating the Pellets, I feed Crumbles.
The feed I buy has Marigold and Kelp.

I feed a Non-Medicated Starter-Grower feed to my Hens for the higher Protein with Oyster Shells separately.
My egg yolks are a nice color.

Left egg is from a Barred Rock, the other is from a ISA Brown. GC

Thanks for your imput GC, it was very reassuring. Sometimes I feel I'm getting shamed by the internet because I have chickens and their yolk isnt orange :hmm
