Dairy Goat and 2014 Kidding!

I think I would personally prefer an alpine, I just like how they look and their colors. So far my ad I put up has been fruitless, though I'm told if I join Facebook there's a group of breeders on there....I might have to explore that more. I'm really excited to try goat milk, but I'd rather have some from someone that milks their own goats rather than the "just try some from your goats" response I got today when I explained it to some relatives. Lol, it doesn't work like that I said

Personally, Alpines are my favorite breed. Go to adga.org. That is the web site of the American Dairy Goat Association. Ask them for a list of breeders near you. That may help you find a suitable goat.

I have a friend who has a herd of alpines, and they are lovely, awesome goats. To me they look HUGE because I am used to Nigerian Dwarves. But they're sweet and produce a lot of milk.

Update: been a busy weekend. Went to a little farm that milks Nubians, got to milk three goats. Didn't get to try any though, next step on my list. So far with my goat herd I'm 3 down 10 to go. All of them have only had twins, one did have a third but it was very premature. Still concerned about having some with three though, all the less fat ones have had babies.

A couple pictures of my first two, they were the triplets and are very tiny. Had to have some TLC in the mostly covered box with heat lamps throughout the day. So far everyone one is doing good.

Update- Nightmare came true last night, I had one doe have 4 kids lol (they just kept coming!!!!) Probably going to end up using milk replacer. Going to see if I can locate some goat only stuff in town.

Congrats on the quads! Are you sure that doe isn't secretly a clown car?

Thx! That's a very good description of her!

When I got out there she had two on the ground so I was like "ok, this is easy enough" moved her into one of the stalls, got the light set up and everything, made sure her bag was open, she started licking them; all going according to procedure. Then just as I was going over to check on some of the others, I see she lays down......and out pops on "oh no". went in there and moved him up by the heat lamp and started rubbing him town with a towel, turned around and there was another one! So glad I was there midwife-ing though as that 4th one was still completely in the sac. I quick popped it open with a nail..(all I had handy) and after coughing up some yuck she was fine.

I think momma is going to able to take care of three, she's still a very big girl and has a lot of milk.

In lieu of milk replacer, just use whole milk from the grocery store. Yes it's pasteurized and all that, but they generally do better on that than milk replacer. If you do have to supplement, just leave all the kids on mom, and give a round of milk however often a day you think they need it.
