Dairy goats....

Is there much of a sale market for Dairy goat milk...and milk by products. I know how hard it is to make a living off of a cattle dairy farm...unless you mass produce but I was thinking that maybe Dairy goats would be a better alternative. And does the milk taste better, worse, or the same as a cows milk?

With as many people allergic to cows milk I would think there'd be a demand for it.

Only commercial goat's milk I've heard of is Meyenburg, out of California. They pasteurize theirs which takes away alot of the good benefits of raw milk. But it may be an FDA requirement. I will e drinking Meyenburg (have for a couple years) til I get my milk goat and am very much looking forward to all the good things I can enjoy with the raw milk and the benefits healthwise. Theirs is much superior to the canned. Which I didn't like but my dog thought was wonderful. LOL

You might check at a farmer's market or co-op in your area and see what they have. I know people sell eggs at our local Saturday morning farmer's market as well as homegrown veggies.

You can't sell raw milk. You have to become a licensed dairy to even sell pasturized milk and are subject to FDA inspections.

The only product you can really sell from goats milk is soap.

You can sell raw goat's milk, but you have to say that it is not for human consumption. People buy it for their pets that way, but truthfully most who buy it, I secretly suspect, drink it. However, if your thinking bigger, there is a huge market for goat's milk these days. Its becoming more and more common. There are grade A goat dairys in every state now.

As far as the taste of goat's milk. I like it just as well, or better. Most kids that visit my house don't even realize its not cow's milk until mine tells them. Any excess milk that you have can be made into butter, cheese, ice cream...all of the things you can do with cow's milk.

You can make wonderful soaps and lotions out of your surplus milk too and these you can market and sell.

Definitely go for it. I know some dairy goat farmers that sell milk locally. If you are in PA, contact PASA for info (pennsylvania association for sustainable agriculture) or ATTRA online. They'll have marketing info for you. I would LOVE some local feta cheese!
