Damaged eye

Ola! Sarah,
They aren't actually our roosters, they just chose us as easy marks to look after them after they were abandoned at the roadside. They rarely roost in the coop at night, they much prefer to go over the road to roost in the very open Tea tree. We have 12 acres, but they seem contented to stay in the acre and a half orchard at the house.
The really dumb thing is, that when one of them is locked in the coop (which is 3m x 3m x 3m) the others stay close by and don't do their daily womble round the orchard.

We have just let Poppet (No. 2) out of the coop where we had him in isolation so that we could give him his eye ointment. Almost instantly Red (No. 4) started to do the fast side step shuffle towards him and the heads down charge. Red is now back in the coop to give Poppet a chance to get used to being out again. I'm not saying that Poppet is an angel, but it's definitely Red that starts any fight with any of them. Sometimes I feel like smacking their silly heads together.

If only we could put bromide in their tea like they did with WW2 soldiers.

We'll just keep trying, since Red is in the coop for the moment, we will try what someone else has suggested and that is try and cuddle him. The vet showed us the other day how to rub them behind the ear to calm them down.
