My 2 new Australorp hens have just started laing but their eggs are being pecked .How do I stop it ? I do try and collect them as soon as possible but I'm just not quick enough

Try adding ceramic eggs into the nests with the hope that when they peck them and don't break them they give up. How high off the ground are your nestboxes? Are they in a darker area?

Welcome to BYC...sorry you're having troubles.

How old are these birds?
Are the shells thin on the eggs
being damaged?

Make sure there is enough bedding material in the nest. If the hole is on the end of the egg, it can happen when it hits the floor of nest box. The hen stands up as the egg pops out. GC

It's common for new layers to peck at eggs. They are trying to figure out what just fell out of their butt. Be sure the bedding is nice and thick. Keep the next boxes dark, if that's an option. Fake eggs can be as simple as a golf ball. I also use plastic Easter eggs, weighted down with a stone wrapped in tissue inside, super glued shut. Chickens don't seem to notice the bright colors. Gather the eggs often, and be sure they have oyster shell available in addition to their layer.
