Dampierre

I got several a year ago. 8 roosters and 2 hens!!! None had the crest that they are supposed to have. Very bad luck with hatching out any.... yes, the gene pool is very small. Mine are now just in with my mixed egg flock. Not worth the money for now.

I have one nice big unfriendly roo, but my pullets met an untimely fate. I've got eggs coming from an ebay seller soon. I put a cream legbar hen in with him. The crest should stay, breed back to Dampierre and maybe 2nd cross will result in half black mottled color pattern. I've got mille fleur d'uccle x ameraucana bantam hens who lay white eggs, so the blue eggs might not be much of an issue.

Wondering if we might increase the genetic pool by X with crested legbars once in awhile then back? I'm thinking the black would be dominant.

I hatched some Alsteirer, an ancient crested breed, the same time I the Dampierre hatched. They have a similar body type, egg laying ability and egg color. I will bring them all up together and see what happens.
The issues I see with crossing with legbars is the leghorn body type and the blue egg gene. But, nothing ventured nothing gained. Go for it and see what happens.

If your bantams are true Ameraucana, they would have 2 genes for blue eggs so all their offspring from non blue egg layers would lay blue/green eggs. It would appear your Ameraucana are Easter Eggers with only one gene for blue eggs.

Well, that's definitely not what I paid for, but my original *blue* chicks turned out to be lavenders with tiny muffs, so that could be so of them and maybe the two old hens left were the ones who were in with the d'uccle roo. That's quite possible, thanks for that info!

I think a blue egg laying Dampierre would be amazing - I myself would love that it laid blue eggs! I have Cream legbar myself, no Dampierres yet, but I’d like to get some too eventually, as they’re really very beautiful.
