Hello!
The message board said to say hi here so I thought I'd oblige!
I'm Dan, I've been keeping chickens for about a year and a half.
Started with 2, a Rhondda Rock (a local breed, bred for life in the Welsh mountains, similar to a black rock)
A Rhondda blue (again a local breed, similar in appearance to a copper blue marans but without the feathery legs.)
Shortly after getting them I decided to build a nice big coop and so I needed more chickens to fill it. Back to the local breeder to for a Welsh poultry blacktail (looks like a rhode island red but with a nice black tail)
And a barred rock.
Then this year my blacktail went broody and I took the opportunity to get some hatching eggs from the same breeder.
So I also have 4 8 week old chicks
A white leghorn, 2 copper black marans and a hybrid who should hopefully lay green eggs (i forget the name)
The leg horn is almost certainly a cockerel and so will be rehomed to a friend who has the space on his allotment to house him.
It's fair to say I have been bitten by the chicken keeping bug. For me they are not just egg producers, they are pets and possibly child replacements (that's what a therapist might say anyway!) they live happily in a purpose built shed/coop and free range in the garden during daylight hours.
I also have a dog (lab cross) 2 cats, one of which is an excellent rat catcher, 2 guinea pigs and some fish.
My dream is to one day buy a small holding, hopefully I can make that happen.
My other hobbies are gardening and DIY although I'm better at the first than the second!
I'm 37, practically married, just without the piece of paper and we are happily child free.
At work I am a truck driver, but not your average truck driver, I'm only slightly overweight!
I don't eat processed food or meat.
That's basically all there is to know about me. So hello and goodbye and I'm sure I'll need advice as the years go by so thank you all in advance.
