Dang Crazy Hen....Nugget is REALLY Broody (BABY PICS! Three of 3 Out)

Broody Poo: Huge lumps of stinky, smelly, too dry but still gooey, nasty, horrible, chicken poo. Imagine back in Jr. High,, putting a pile of poo in a paper bag, lighting it on fire and running? This smells 100 times worse! If you step in it, throw your shoes away!!!

Oh My! Thanks for the info, at least now I will know what to expect.

We're still having to haul Nugget off the nest. She just won't come out on her own, but since she did drink and eat very well when she was off today, I may have to leave her there. But, the silly woman didn't poop! How can that be? Guess I'll remove her later today to see if she will poop, then I'll not mess with her again for a couple days, see if she gets off on her own. I wish she would like most of mine do. Today is Day Five for her nine eggs. We plan to candle them once, maybe on Monday, to remove any infertiles.

No, that is not true at all. I've had hatchery hens go broody several times. They are more bred toward egg production, though, so it's more likely that one removed generations from the hatchery will brood. Depends somewhat on the breed, too.

Ok, this is the funniest story! Nugget is on a thick nest of straw in the broody pen, but after 9 days, she was messing it up so the eggs were almost on the wooden floor. DH had the bright idea to put a towel under the nest so if she parted the straw, there would be padding. We removed her and I slipped a doubled over blue towel under the nest and plumped the straw back up. You could see a hint of blue on both front corners of the nest. She noticed, hesitated like it was a snake in her nest, but finally did go back on her eggs.

This morning, what do I find? She has moved all the eggs off the nest entirely, off that dangerous blue towel, and they are on a tiny bit of straw and shavings. We remove her from the nest to take out the offending towel and add more straw. She had all the eggs under her except one that was shoved to the back and was cool to the touch (Snow's egg...hope it didn't perish). So, now, the straw goes from one side of the pen to the other and no matter where she goes, she's on the bedding, but I think she'll be fine now. Amazing and frustrating things, these broodies! Never occurred to me that she'd notice the towel and if she did, that it would be an issue for her.
