Dang Crazy Hen....Nugget is REALLY Broody (BABY PICS! Three of 3 Out)

i have eggs due tomorrow..& i have 1 pip so far as of this morning!!!! this is sooo eggciting!!!!

It's in the high 80's today and tomorrow, will be 90 or so, but after that, we have a run of 70's highs coming. That's more like it!



ETA: Well, tomorrow is Day 20! I'm excited. Nugget was raised up over her eggs to cool them off for a bit. Must be really hot underneath her, poor baby.

Day 20 here! While waiting for Nugget's eggs to pip, I am whip-stitching the last few feet of the binding onto my quilt. Reminds me of someone sitting next to the bedside of a woman in labor, knitting, LOL.

Please allow me to interject.

First Frenchy my bantam Friz is due tomorrow. She's got 4 two Dels and two EE's. As for the poo thing? She is the smelliest bird. The whole room stinks to the lower pits of hell.

Second I've had 4 hens go broody all hatchery girls. Frenchy, a BO who is on eggs now, a Dominique, a CM and a non bantam friz.

Third yesterday a non-hatchery CM seems to have gone broody so I took the eggs she was on and put 4 of the eggs from the hen below her under her. She was still there this last night and this morning.

Fourth when the Dominique was broody I never saw her off the nest. When she was finished she only had the 2 eggs I gave her. Even though she was in the coop the whole time no one else gave her any extras, as happens when they get off. Same with the BO that's broody now. I don't think Iv'e seen her off the next either. The CM however I have and she's got plenty of eggs now including her original 6. Which is why I took 6 and moved them up stairs to the broody over her. I did feed the Dominique bits of bread but I never say her off the nest. I do think I heard her breathe a sigh of relief when the eggs hatched and mumble "I thought they'd never hatch, I've really have to go to the bathroom".

Question: The eggs I put under the new broody have 9 days to go. Think that will work and she won't be confused? There are chickens that can count, right? I forgot what they're called, but there is a term for them.

No Delaware broodies yet.

One of my friends in California was incubating Barred Rock eggs from me. When they hatched, only one BR made it. Her EE hen has been broody about a week, if I recall, and she gave her the chick. She took it like she hatched it herself, no problem.

Ooops, that was over 40K posts!

I can't really say whether the eggs i bought are real Barred Rocks. I got them at an auction and they were dirty. Two were so dirty I tossed them in the trash, so I figure anyone who would offer eggs that dirty forsale, would not really be all that concerned if they were pure.

I sold all the Delware chicks this hatch but I don't think I'll be selling anymore until I have replacements for the older hens. Of course the ones from you Cyn are still here. Even though they are roos I expect to hang on to them til I see if there are any I really don't like the looks of. They are tough roos I'll tell ya. When I go into the coop they all run at me and start pecking my feet. Just what side of the tracks are they from? If I didn't know better I'd say they are from the hood. I expect to come around the side of the coop and see them leaned up against smoking cigarettes. Can you envision a poultry version of West Side Story? I suppose I could name the one pullet " Natalie Wood". The two sides the Dels and the Marans.

The one pullet of course is never going to leave till she lays about 1,000 eggs. I may just keep two each of other breeds and have mainly Delawares. Well I already have mainly Delawares.

Tim, the Delawares are a very mouthy bunch. They tend to outgrow some of that, but even Isaac bit me a couple times when he was a youngster. It took two sessions of grabbing him up and holding his beak for a few seconds. He didn't much care for that. He wasn't mating girls yet, so it was just boundary-testing behavior. He has been an angel ever since his "aversion therapy". His brother started aggression by shoe-biting, then he would flog, but that one was super-friendly as a youngster while Ike was a bit standoffish.

DH braved the Beak of Death to slide his hand under Nugget. He said one egg is "crackly", but he didn't slide them out to actually look at them. Today is Day 21 (well, it actually begins just about noon).



ETA: just now, we heard at least one chick under her, so I guess one is hatched and don't know about the other two yet. Will check in later.
