Smaller mesh wire like 1/4 x 1/2 will help deter snakes and small rodents in your coop.
securing any holes and cracks will also keep them out.
sorry for the loss of your birds and sorry the snake had to lose its life.
tighter pest control goes a long way to keep from losing your animals.

Sorry you lost one. It really isn't all that uncommon for a snakes eyes to be bigger than its belly, or jaws as the case may be. I am always conflicted with things like this, I love snakes but I don't like losing pets.

I know of two snakes on our property that we have always let stay. There are lots of poisonous varieties around and we prefer the ones that can't kill us. If they become a problem with the chickens they will have to move though. The garter snake at this point is way to small to even take a chick, the brown water snake though is a good 5 feet and could easily take one.

Good luck on the rain by the way.

I am neutral on this subject, especially since I moved far away from those big snakes. But our neighbor, back in the day, used to place light bulbs in the nests when he thought snakes were about. They apparently ate the bulbs and died.

wow! sounds cruel, but if comes down to it, and snakes are eating my eggs, i'll keep it in mind.

I used to ride horses with an old man who was a retired game warden for Wise county in TX. He was eighty about 15 years ago. He has since passed...

Anyway, he told me never to kill snakes because a dead snake puts off a smell that immediately makes all of the female snakes in the area go into heat. YIKES!

This may be an old Texas wive's tale, who knows. That information alone kept me from ever killing snakes. (Well, I don't think I could do it no matter what because I such a chicken!)

Does anyone know if this wive's tale holds any truth?

I lost a huge hen last year to a snake. I didn't actually catch the snake trying to eat her, but the smoothed back wet head/neck was enough evidence of what did it! She was sitting on a nest on the ground in the coop.

Ok, so I like some snakes, but the fear factor of dieing by venom scares me beyond imagination. Same goes for spiders. I am absolutely arachniphobic(sp?). My feeling towards things like this is that you(pests) are fine to live in your house, but let me live without you in mine. This includes my hen house and kennel area as well as my garden and any sheds or structures I might have on the property. Thankfully the only snakes we have seen out here have been garter(?) snakes. And my chickens gleefully eat those.

Sooo sorry to hear of your loss.

I believe your game warden friend might have been a bit senile in his latter years!!!

Sounds more like a female Black widow spider tale than a snake!!
