d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Actually my DW found the first two hens by themselves at a swap meet. Felt sorry for them and brought them home. Then we found a pair, the roo and the larger hen being sold at an auction...Those were the first we had seen. So that's the story of our quad...In this part of the country I don't think they've caught on to much yet...but we'ree going to our best to change that!

Especially now that we know that they come in a multitude of colors.

Thanks for the warm welcomes

yep welcome to the thread and the BREED. No like most staes, OK doesnt have a lot of d'anvers. Unfortunately outside quail they are a rarity so it makes me feel good to see others are wanting to help out in getting the rarer colors more established. We need a lot more dedicated breeders as well as hobbist to help promote the breed and get it's numbers up. To me, for a bantam, they are just the perfect bird. Everyone that ever sees them are instantly hooked, so with time, these rarer colors will be more readily available. Lord knows theres a big demand for them. I go threw thousands every year.

that's a silver quail pullet. If I had to guess from knowing whos there, it was entered by Tom Shepard. He finally got a trio from me last year after a two year wait.

Aubrey, I need to make some bb reds. I have the cockrel but my hen choices are white or quail. The way I see it I can get there in two years with the white but then you got the recessive white splits in there. The quail will take an extra year with alot of junk birds. Which is the best way to go?

I'd go with the quail, but just because off them you might be able to make some buff columbians also.
Either way will work, but that rec white can be a pain in the but on them too.

lcw, he look OK . Think he has to be from a blue quail line due to the yellow body color. The blue washes it out some, and even the blacks off blues will often be yellow like he is. Wouldnt do well in a show because of this, but he's still a nice looking bird either way. Personally, I have a lot of yellow quail like him too, I like them, they just arent the correct shades for showing is all.
Other than that, he looks nice, good full bull neck, nice carrage and posture

Aubrey is right on that part, if you were working towards BB Red with a good cock bird, use the Quail hens.
Quail is wild type partridge (BB Red) with the addition of rec. Black and Columbian. So getting back to BB red will be easier from quail.

the back cross to the bb is the most predictable, should be 50% bb red and 25% each quail and buff columbian. This is how I got a lot of my buff columbians, this way and bb red to millie fluer does it at 100% in one cross (split mottled of course but 1 f1 to f1 cross cleans them up)

should also get all 3 from a F1 to F1 also off the bb red x quail , but not with as predictable odds
