d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

yes, trim it off, or if it's just stuck to a feather or two, pluck it off. If it's a big mass, and mulit feathers, just soak it or hold that hot rag on it to loosen it up

sounds good Cole, will be on the look out for it, thanks

Hi everyone. Some of you may remember me from this past spring/summer when I posted questions about the d'Anvers that my son bought for his 4-H project. Well, he has fallen in love with them as they have proven to be great birds. They aren't the greatest for show quality, but he loves their look and that he is able to handle them.

He has decided that instead of getting a different breed to be more competitive at Fair, he would rather work on improving what he has. So now we are shopping for birds from show quality lines.

For now, we are looking for we are looking for another 1-2 hens of brood quality or some chicks. We currently do not have an incubator, but after we finish the new coop we are planning to build one. After that is complete, we may look into eggs. Does anyone know of breeders in the Ohio area that may have some available? Due to the crazy weather we are having this winter, I'm not to sure about shipping.

Thanks,
Roger

I forgot to mention we are looking to stay with the Quail color.

There are currently pictures of my sons birds on page 95 of this thread. I'm going to try to get new pictures this weekend.

Dobieslady1, Those look nice. The roo has a nicer comb than my sons.

yep Dobies those look nice better every time you post them

Roger,

You may want to try Tom Shepard in OH, he should have a lot of them, there are tons of d'anver breeders in Ohio, that's about the biggest population of d'anvers state wise.
Tom knows all of them, if he doesnt have some nice quail on hand, he'll know some one with them... Show Quality ones are gonna cost you though, just be prepared haha... They are all big time national show competitors up there, so if you want one, they make you earn it

is there a link or somethin' yu could give me aubrey?i'm gonna get some eggs from yu as we as tom but i don't kno how to get ahold of him.
thanks,cole.

he's an old schooler, doesnt do the computer, just his home phone is all I have. He travels all over the country to every show out there, so it's pretty hard to get him. I cant post his number here but I'll PM it to you

She'd better watch it. The week that her Little Love Rufus comes to live with her, there might be 2 for 1 special and Rusty will be in the box with him.

Rusty prefers to watch The Rifleman and sit on a pillow in front of the fireplace, just so you know, Ladyhawk. In fact, that is the only time he leaves his "toerag genetics" at the front door like a muddy pair of shoes.

ETA: I'll check back with you near the time I'm going to start collecting eggs from my BRs to hatch, which should be about the 30th. If you don't have any, no problem.

The Rifleman? Good Lord he is petrified that is why he behaves, he is thinking he is next in line for the firing squad. Nice tactic but mean even for you Cyn. HEY you ain't doing that to My Little Love are you woman?

Cross your fingers, guys! Aimee looks like she's making serious moves to lay her first egg soon. She went out, but came immediately back in and is going in and out of nests with serious concentration. I'd love that because I do plan to hatch some BR eggs in a couple of weeks, so if I could also hatch my first D'Anvers from my own flock, it would be awesome!

My D'Anvers are 29 weeks old tomorrow and haven't laid any eggs yet. Gazpacho is VERY interested in the nest box - he goes in there and scratches around, peeping his high pitched excited peep, and Amelia just looks at him with that "Yeah, what-ever" look. They roost on the edge of the nest box facing inward and stare at the shavings at night. I have an egg in there that came from one of my other girls, who are 5 weeks younger and have been laying eggs since mid-December. Gazpacho buries the egg under the shavings, then digs it up, and then buries it again (like a dog would to a bone!) I even have the nest box in the corner with paper towels draped over the corner of the cage to give them more privacy. Silly birds. Silly chicken-momma.
