d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Yep he lives right smack dab in the middle of where it hit, Lakeland GA

You know I havent even thought about that, need to try to call him and check in.
He contacted me about a week ago about some cuckoo chicks to hatch for a friend of his, but that was the last I heard from him.
Will let you know if I get ahold of him

Please do! He's such a great guy. I hope he's okay.

That d'Anver chick that didn't seem to be thriving is still with us. It breathes really fast most of the time and sometimes acts like it is gagging, but I did look down the gullet and nada. It still may not make it, but it's running around with the others. I gave them their own dustbath with fine dirt from outside and they were having a great time, that one included. I just don't know what to make of it.

JJ has a mole in his organization. In the picture I can see it using mind control on him...that little yellow one is plotting in favor of the Hairy Legged Horde. Muahahaha

Someone on the Okie thread had a chick doing the same thing. Our resident chicken go-to-guy said that sometimes a baby has an air sac leak. This can be easily resolved by using a needle to puncture the skin and allow the air to escape. It really made a lot of sense. You can feel the bubble under the skin. I'll see if I can go back and copy the information for you.

I checked it for a bubble under the skin. Nothing. Of course, it's so teeny, it's hard to examine, but I didn't feel anything amiss. I've had that happen before and I did prick it with a sterilized needle and let the air out, but this one looks normal, just breathes really oddly.

That would be good information for everyone to have, though, Kathryn. I've seen posts about air bubbles on chicks at various times over the years on BYC.

Here is the information I gleaned from the conversation:

Chick having difficulty breathing and rapid breathing with a clicking sound..

"Is he peeping really loudly too? The clicking when he breathes makes me think that it's possibly a ruptured air-sac which is a common problem with chicks.
Look him over really well to make sure that there is no air trapped under the skin at the base of the neck. It should look like a puffy place if there is. If you can confirm there is air trapped the place can be relieved by nicking the area with the point of a razor blade, just a poke and not a slice. It may have to be repeated a time or two until the air-sac heals up. And it should heal in just a day or two."

"Could a syringe needle be used to make the puncture?"

"Yes, would be as effective. Keep the puncture clean and watch it for a few days"

Causes could be as simple as being stepped on by the hen.

No matter how teeny the baby seems, it's worth the check-up.

I have found so much good information here also. I started making notes by category and adding it to my Chicken health books. So many helpful breeders here on BYC.

Great info there. No discernible air bubble at the base of the neck on this one-I remember that chick a couple years ago and that was easy to fix. No clicking when this one breathes. Will have to check again in the morning. At least, it's eating and drinking on its own just fine.
