Aubrey, a couple questions about the chicks I hatched from your eggs.

First, this one hatched out of an egg marked crele but it was at the time you changed the pen back to BB red. You said you marked them all crele but you thought they would end up bb reds. It looked like a bb red chick, I am wondering if it will be barred.

This one hatched out of an egg marked blk but it had sort of a quail face, now it is getting these laced feathers. Any ideas?

thanks,
jj

first one just looks bb from what I can tell. The creles would be heavily barred. As you know, those were still in project phase. Single copy barred crele male over bb hens, so even with that, they could still end up un barred.

The last one I have no idea if it came from a black egg. It should have been black but sure dont look it. I've never had anything come up out of the blacks other than blacks, so that's a new one on me. Want to see what it grows into, but sure looks quail so far. I did add a new male this year that came from another breeder. Still all I have hatched have been all black, but his may have had quail in them. Still though I wouldnt think that a lone would make it come out looking like this one?? Who knows. Got to be something under that black, and in d'anver, I'd say it'd be safe to say it's quail on most of them

How do you keep the d'Anvers from having the ends of their wing feathers that drag frayed and broken? I have my chicks on shavings and they already have rough looking wing feathers.

If your birds are chicks, I may know the answer. .
How old are your babies and are they still under a heat lamp?
Too much heat can make bantam's wing feathers grow too quickly.
I back the heat off each week by 5 degrees and now turn it off several hours during the middle of the day.

I only have two adults so far...so for adults, I'll let the breeders and those who show give you their advice.

I have two sets. The older ones are fully feathered. Those have been out from under the light for about 3 weeks now. They stay in a building at night: no drafts on them. I also have Modern chicks in with them. The MGBs look nice and slick, but my Self Blue d'Anvers just look kind of scruffy overall and their wing tips are messy.

The other group is about 3 weeks old and I do have a light in their pen. They are also in the trailer. It gets down in the high 50's at night and up in the 80s during the day. I have turned the light off or moved it up a few times during the day because they got hot. These chicks are the same as the others, MGB chicks look good and d'Anvers are scruffy.
