d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

If I had room for them I really would take a set of them all. They're soooooo beautiful! We love the 3 that we have. They're full of personality and they're friendlier than a lot of our birds, even the cochin bantams who are known for their sweet temperament. I can hardly wait to have some of the bbr and gingers. The little ginger pullet that I do have is sitting on my lap right now. She thinks she lives in here. Can't leave the doors open... but I do!

With my first round of d'Anvers I blindly, but accurately, sexed my chicks at two weeks. My new four d'Anvers, from Boggy Bottoms, are officially 2 weeks old and while I have my guesses - it never hurts to have a second opinion. Off the bat I would say that of the four (two quails, one dun and a black): I have one male. For sure at least. The lack of patterning on the black throws me, and throw in skin coloration then I call it good.

Here is the quail d'Anver in question of being a cockerel:

Here he is again second from the right, next to the black:

The above photo also serves as a layout to which of the d'Anvers are males (on the right) and which are pullets (on the left). Like I said, the black is a little hard to tell, and probably the shyest, though the dun seemed to always scurry away when the camera clicked/flashed.

Best picture I got of the black d'Anver:

The flash really fades it, but the male quail d'Anver in question really does have the most prominent comb. The black's is also larger than the two females but color wise I have no clue. I also think that above picture serves as an example to back up the guesses. Notice how the d'Anver male is getting a lot more color on his back, versus the more defined lacing of the two females. I love them anyhow!! They're MUCH more friendly than the pair of quails I have from Ideal. The box in their brooder is in fact a Corona box.. I feel it says more about me as a resourceful college student than a cheap or wasteful one, lol.

you're 100% right on the quail, cockerel for sure
based off comb, black is too
other two do look like pullets, cant really see the combs good, but like you said, color is looking pullet for sure

been looking threw the pens this week, wow I held back a ton of birds this year!
Think I am going to have to add on 10 more stalls for the coming breeding season.
Will keep yall posted on them, and hope to have a new set of pics from all of them up soon, just waiting on everyone to get in to full plumage

Aubrey,

I understand the difficulty of extra birds on feed bills.. That is why I, from the bottom of my heart, I am offering to take-in any birds that you should need to part with

Seriously though, your birds are great

Sooo.....I think this is a Belgian D' Avers....only because that is the closest resemblance I can find. My kids call her a roadrunner. She's a wild little thing, in the first pic, my son is "Sneaking up on her" to try to catch her. Can anybody tell me when she's going to lay? She's like, 6 or 7 months now, and we want one of her eggs!!!
