d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Chickee, you've got a great roo! Can you hold him, or hand-feed him treats? He sounds like a nice, good-natured fellow.

My d'Anver babies are 2 weeks old and doing great! They get two outdoor field trips per day with me, weather permitting. Sorry for the size of the pics.

Getting prettier with each set of pictures!

Great that you are enjoying them so much!

My porcelain rooster lets me pick him up to get petted. He caulks his head and looks up at me with the sweetest look. He doesn't want to take treats from me because he wants the girls to have them like a good rooster does

Guess I need to get my chicks out and take some new pictures. They are changing so much. Looks like the only buff Columbian chick is a rooster and the other 4 are 2 pair.

Mina hatched two babies, both I had marked as Aimee's eggs. One is feather legged, one not, just like my EE had in her chicks. Could it be that Aimee is now throwing some with no feathers on the legs, or could I have made two mistakes like that? I guess either is possible. Or the ones with no feathers are cockerels, ack! Aimee has always thrown pullets, at least up to this point.

There are four more Aimee eggs left to hatch, with two different broodies. I honestly don't need these bantams, but had put her eggs in there since my Delaware rooster's fertility has been going down and I've had to toss so many eggs and had broodies end up with no babies, just hedging my bets that the poor hens would have something hatch.

And now Aimee herself is broody as of yesterday. As soon as Mina's chicks hatched, Aimee decided I should have yet another hen sitting.

Gorgeous pictures, warmheart!

Chickee, I would really love to see your chicks! You've got such neat colors, I'm curious what they look like at that age. Is buff columbian a light buff or a deeper caramel? Thank you for the compliments on my babies!

SpeckledHen, Thank you! How is your Penny feeling? Any eggs yet? I love reading about your girls! Sounds like you have lots of broodyness happening at your place. It seems to be going around!

I can't do brooder box chores without Elmer glueing himself to my shoulder!

We have a special place for him here, to someday apprentice under Alfie, our ancient,

wise, patient bantam-mix rooster. I'll choose a hen from this hatch, likely Emmaline, as sweet Emmy is the calmest baby chick you can imagine.

Yesterday, Alfie and our 4 hens were temporarily in a pen watching us, as I gave the chicks a field trip in the backyard. Watching protectively, Alfie the mini-roo suddenly called out to the chicks: "BABIES, WATCH OUT! The kitty is near!" Each baby ran and hid. Smokey, our cat, casually came up and flopped down to hang out. (He knows the chicks) Alfie already feels protective of the babies.

Penny is still the same. I hold her several times each day as she insists.

Lucy was limping badly so put her in the pet carrier last night, then today, realized that one toenail was snapped off and hanging. Didn't see anything wrong yesterday so it must have been just cracked. Today, the cause of her limp was obvious. We removed the handing nail and only the quick remains. Slathered it with antibiotic ointment, gave her a baby aspirin, and she is back in the flock. Thankfully, it was just that.

The Baby Huey, aka Valentino the Dela-Wyan-Cauna cockerel is in with the old ladies for a couple of weeks until he leaves for KY. Was concerned what he'd do to the tiny D'Anver chicks and knew the hens couldn't fight him off without someone being hurt. He's been mating the hens since 8 weeks old, or doing a darn good imitation of it, and he's awkward and leggy and very large.
