d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

I run 2-4 males per 4-10 hens with no problems. They arent one of those sex crazy breeds like a lot of chickens so over mating really isnt a major issue with them. Now I wouldnt do 2 hens and 3-4 males by no means, LOL

Good grief, no way I'd do that! Poor hens! I only have the seven so may have to keep them all, unless it's just way too male-heavy. If I had four pullets and three cockerels, that would work, though, huh? I do think the tiny one is a pullet--there is just no comb there at all. I'm pretty sure I have three cockerels and I hope that's all, but it's just the luck of the draw.

yes that would work.
Just a guess but t pic with the millie and the porcelain, the porcelain looked female, and male on the millie...and yep, I would think the smaller one would most likely be a hen too, the boys bulk up pretty quick.

I was thinking that about that picture, too, Aubrey. That is a different MF than the one whose comb is really pink, I think. I don't care what the porcelains are, they both stay. They are so gorgeous, such delicate coloring. Thanks for all your teaching, by the way.

oh no problem. give it another week or so, and if you'd like, post a face shot pic of all of them... I can give you a fairly decent idea of whats what by then I imagen

I have few questions about d'anver for anyone that can answer.
What is their personality?
Are they good layer?
Broody?
What is the difference in size and personality between Millie Fleur D'Uccle and d'anver Millie Fluer?

Thank you

Cynthia....you take such great pictures! Jeesh they are soooo cute! Aubrey will have two special girls for me later this summer...right Aubrey?

Okay Aubrey,
got my new bator all set up and ready to go. It is holding its temperature perfectly and can't wait to see how it hatches. I got my Ameraucana eggs in today and will be setting them this evening when I get in. Do you know when or have you already sent my D'Anver eggs? I'm so excited and can't wait to have some more blue and the mottled can't wait!!!! I just want to make sure and keep up with the PO. They hadn't called me this morning on my Ameraucana eggs (I called to make sure

) and wonder if they would've just let them sit there.....just don't want to take any chances.

I'm not sure of how things work in terms of d'Uccle and d'Anvers demeanor (the variety shouldn't matter) but the few d'Uccles I have been around are just as sweet as the d'Anvers. Size wise, I'd say almost the same, though d'Uccles seem to be more upright in their carriage. The d'Anvers I have with my flock which includes not only chickens by a small Beltsville White pair [turkey], some Saxony ducks and other large fowl chickens: they can more than hold their own. They're the sweetest things, ours huddle up at night to roost and the boys do a great job at protecting their ladies.

Good layers they are not, I assume you aren't looking for a d'Anver laying flock.

However, it would be cool to see that many little girls running around. When ours do lay it is pretty consistent, but from what I understand they do not lay very many eggs; less than 100?? Also, their eggs are TINY; comparable to a pigeon egg.

I have heard mixed reviews on how broody d'Anvers can be but we have one pullet who is just about a year old [from Ideal Poultry] who is attempting to brood again!! The last time she went broody she sat on a dozen eggs and only about 5 of them were her's!!

She has issues being successful, lasted about 2 weeks. The Chanteclers decided they wanted the nest box back and she was removed from her duties. Here is a picture from the first time she went broody:

My d'Anver, Olive, has the best personality of the coop! Curious, docile, friendly, and most of all, trustful of you.

She hasn't gone broody yet, she's only a year old however. Is there anything you can do to entice a hen to go broody? My friend has some bantam rock eggs I'm sure she would let me hatch under her, and Olive would be such a cute mom!!!!!!!
