d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

My two d'Anvers chicks both have wings hanging towards the ground. Does that mean they are cockerels or do the pullet's wings drag like that, too? They are only a few days old.

yep, they all can act like that. just keep an eye on the combs, the boys will start getting broad and red before long, the pullets will stay as little thin lines. That's the best way to tell when young, though still not 100%. Watch for color patterns to start to come in when the feather up unless they are solid colored.

JJ, yes, that one has eye stripes and is much darker than any of the others. I bet Rusty is the daddy of that one. One is super blonde; almost wondered if it was even a mille! Number 8 is drying in the bator with the Barred Rock chick right now. One chick, one of Carly's, has a hock issue-it's extended out to the side a bit. If it can't get its leg under it by tomorrow, sadly will have to euthanize it. Her eggs are super tiny-it's a wonder how anything can hatch from them anyway.

Cole, the broodies are on Day 8 today with 4 eggs each.

Here is my little blondie:

Eye Stripe Kid:

Baby with hock issue-I hope it will resolve itself by tomorrow. If not, well, you know... too bad because it's one of the darker ones of the bunch. It's the hock showing in the picture that is extended too far outward.

Other Pics:

The BR x EE's face is a hoot, LOL.

JJ, I honestly think it's a slipped tendon or at least, something similar. I don't really expect it to get better, but will give it awhile longer unless DH decides to euthanize it tonight. I've seen it in other chicks and you can't fix this stuff. If it doesn't resolve on its own, I'm not going to splint it or any of that stuff that never works anyway. Been there, done that way too many times. The others seem to be doing well, though.

I just set a bunch more. I have one of Aimee's and one of Penny's from just before they went broody, 5 of Carly's and 5 of the lav Cochin hen's eggs. Those are a really cool cross! I'm sure I have a pair of those, judging from comb and wing and tail development already. Of course, Aimee and Penny each have a couple of their own under them as well so I'll have plenty of little D'Anvers and Coch'anvers around here.
