ETA: The chick with the hock issue isn't getting better. He reminds me of Zane, using his wings as crutches, so he'll be put down later. Another one isn't thriving, holding itself vertically to breathe, breathing rapidly, eyes closed. I think that one will pass on in a little while, failure to thrive. I looked down its throat to be sure the airway wasn't obstructed and it's a clear shot down the gullet so it's just not right somehow. Darn it, only 8 D'Anvers hatched and now, I'll lose two of those. Well, the broodies have a few more and I set a few more for another go-round (not the same incubator-that other one is toast). It's just that this batch of eggs has only one each of Aimee's and Penny's and 5 of Carly's, whose chicks are about half the size of the other ones. Of course, her eggs are teensy-tinsy, too.

That one is A-Ok, JJ. I bet Rusty is the sire of that one, I just have a feeling.

I have some that lay little eggs so the chicks are little. But they seem to catch up sooner or later.

Yeah, I've seen that before in my other breeds, too.

Carly has developed an attitude since her sisters have gone broody. She has been caught fighting with Rufus several times. Aubrey had to break up a fight between her and Aimee this morning-well, Carly was trying to fight, but Aimee was just clucking and running around frantically trying to drink, eat, poop and get back to her eggs. Aubrey jumped between them and Carly faced off with him, too. A teensy bit testy, she is lately.

Good grief, I'm wrong more than I'm right these days! The chick that was not long for this world still may die, but we put a dustbath in the brooder and that little one is showing interest in it and jumping into it. He looks perkier right now. The one with the hock issue is actually standing on his good leg and hopping across the brooder at lightning speed, then using its wings for balance. The hock is in permanent bent position just like my Zane's was, though Zane's came later in life from an injury.

I've been giving both of them vitamin water, both Avia Charge 2000 in the waterer as well as a drop of Polyvisol in each of their beaks. The chick with the bad hock sure has heart, I can say that for it. I can't keep it here, no more handicapped birds that need any special care, I just can't, but it's doing really well for its handicap right now. I'd give it to someone if they wanted it as a special pet; otherwise, I guess it will need to be euthanized.
