d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Ladyhawk will be coming next week to visit and will be taking 19 of the 26 chicks back with her. She'll decide which to keep and which to sell to folks who've been asking for D'Anvers up there in KY. My chick starter usage should go down dramatically at that point and hers will increase for awhile. Mina, Lucy and the two lavender Coch'Anvers will eventually move into the bantam flock so that Aubrey, Angus and Rufus will have a few more ladies to harass. Still thinking about letting Rufus go live with LH, but DH is quite attached to the Little Love so I may just let him stay, even though he is irritating as heck sometimes. Even when I let them free range, he takes time out of his busy, exciting day to seek me out for a ritual shoe-flogging, LOL.

I have only six OEGB chicks atm and they are eating like crazy! It is normal for these tiny chicks to eat this much? I don't mind feeding them all they want, but is that a normal thing? My families silkies don't eat as much as these little hardy ones.

Other question, How similar are OEGB and D'anvers in size and personality. Does anyone know? They obviously eat the same ammount! And here I was thinking tiny birds ate less!

They will slow down in a few months, eating that is , then they will just dig it out of the feeder like they are looking for gold or something.

Wet the two breeds are the same size, but dry d'anvers look rounder.

Would anyone be willing to show or tell about their chicken areas? Runs and coops etc? How do you keep tiny birds? Ive heard of people keeping them off the ground in cages rather then on the ground. Is there any benifit to that?

that's great Aspen!
Very glad to hear it, 16 of 18 sure aint bad in shipping either, glad everyone on here is doing good with them...

Thanks for letting me know. I know what you mean about those Roo's. I just thought if anyone had any it would be here. I will probably just order from Aubrey and have to wait, but it will be worth it. Is there more problems shipping eggs about a month from now with the HEAT in GA? Just curious.
Melissa

I ship them year round if they are laying. They way I do them they are pretty well insulated, plus they go from here to Macon and get on a plane so they arent in the GA postal system but for 2 hours, then it's off to where ever. Yes right now is the best time of year, late Feb- early May, but they still do well threw the summer if treated right.
It's was 95 here yesterday...LOL so April or August still gone be in the 90's here

they dont eat much compared to large fowl haha
yes pretty similar oegb to d'anver. I'd say male d'anvers are more vicious though

50 lbs of chick starter/grower in 3 days! I have got to slow down.

Edit- then a hour later puts another 2 dozen in the sportsman.

you just getting started JJ!!
Opened bag two for the week today and just finished up a new brooder for this weeks hatch. I never did get around to taking pics of those new color this weekend...God I run out of day before I know it. Think I wrapped 5-600 eggs Sunday alone. That takes a while. Think I spent 6 hours on ebay and boxing Sunday...haha then people get mad when I charge $14 for shipping on there..haha you come do it then!!

Just bought 1800 square feet of bubble wrap too, But it's worth it in the long run, couldnt do all this without it... you getting there JJ!!!

Little iffy on the buff columbian color. The one is a mille for sure. My buffs are usually redder. Those actually look a lot like my silver duckwing phoenix?? THAT WOULD BE COOL! I lost that one I got, figured I would it was tiny tiny.
If they start feathering up buff then that's what they are. Been a year since I hatched any, first ones due this weekend. Had one Saturday but it ended up being a lavender one. On your first ones now, they will look a lot like bb reds on the hens, you have to keep back breeding them to clean the backs up. They'll have a lot of black stippling on them to start, but each yaer they clean up a bit more. It happens the first cross, but takes 2-3 more years to get them perfect, mine still aint 100% clean but this years chicks should be.
