Dared myself to own chickens

Thanks for the welcome, I'm so excited:D as of today my 5th of 10 chicken starts laying egg, it's their 20th week.

Another benefit of bantams is they are so "stinkin' cute," you can't ignore them. Also they eat less, are easier for young children to handle, and some of the banty breeds lay a pretty good sized egg despite their size.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I agree that fresh backyard chicken eggs are better than store bought eggs. If eggs are your main objective then bantams are not the way to go as their eggs are very small. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What three varieties of chickens do you have?

Thanks Michael, I got 3 White leghorns, 2 Plymouth barred rocks and 5 Silver Laced Wyandottes which I've purchased in an impulse within few minutes in the store after seeing the chicks and asking some Q's. Few weeks later I became a builder, flock raiser, and couple of thousand poorer and have less sleeps researching, planning, building my shed/coupe and trying to find out how to take care of this chickens. It's funny that a few minutes in the store consumed the rest of my spring and summer, which I found exciting.

LOL! Join the flock. We are all obsessed with our chickens here and very few BYC members are immune to "chicken math.") You should get lots of eggs from those three varieties, especially from the White Leghorns, which are egg laying machines (although I prefer the temperament of the BRs and SLWs over that of the Leghorns). Good luck with your flock.

I couldn't agree more, my BRs are awesome. Tho 2 of my leghorns are like dogs wants to be petted all the time. They amazed me how small and light they are and lay big eggs 6days a week. I wish they lay gold(lol) so I can pay for their coop. Ha ha

We sell all of our extra eggs (and there's lots of them) to the neighbors in our area. If you decide at some point you want to up your brown egg output, you should add some Black Sex Links to your flock. They are hardy and friendly brown egg laying machines. In really cold winter weather, they will actually outlay the Leghorns.

Wow nice to know, I'll certainly look into the black sex link, will they integrate w/ my flock easy? funny I'd been checking on egg cartons and containers last night since some of my friends here are interested on buying eggs from me.
