I am currently in the possession of a big beautiful splash Marans Rooster, 4 black Marans Hens, a huge amount of blue adolescent and chick marans babies, 4 welsummer/penendesenca (?spelling) crosses and a couple of splash marans adolescents. She was just grabbing birds and saying, 'here!'. They're are in quarantine in my stall as I type. Quite excited. I think I have around 25 new birds. I did cull one of the chicks last night due to it's bad, bad leg that I tried to stabilize but just couldn't. Thanks so much for passing her info to me! I'm quite excited about my new birds. One of my friends who has chickens is interested in the dark egg layers now as well.



***To all ya'll folks out there... I didn't mean that a Cuckoo Marans wasn't a breed. I just meant that I got mine from a hatchery and that they probably weren't full bred. Mine from the hatchery lay some pretty eggs though and they're pretty dark too!

And the reason I added 'REAL' to my post was because I was getting corrected in the past when I was posting about egg color and my hatchery birds. I was getting told that I needed to go to a Marans breeder to get the dark eggs. That's all. I'll go back and reword the post.***

i have welsummers, their eggs are very dark almost copper in color. they don't usually lay in large clutches, but the eggs are good. they produce for 3 out of their short 9 year life span and winter laying slows dramatically in winter. they get broody in late spring and don't usually make good moms, but if you want to keep chicks they're usually hardy and easy to sex early the hens have darker heads and backs

Hey, Serendipity, how's the temperament of your Welsummer/Penedesenca's looking? I've been considering some Pene's (since they're purportedly so heat resistant, and I live in a very hot, dry climate), but have been warned away since they're supposed to be real flighty. Does the Welsummer blood in yours stabilize them some?

Also, do you have any pics of them? ^_^

I too love the dark egg layers. But, my vote has to go to the welsummers. I supose I am partial because we raise welsummers! The photo below is of some of our welsummer eggs that our daughter won the egg class with, at the fair this summer.

The penedenescenca/welsummers are pretty flighty. They're locked in a stall so I hope they get a little used to me before their quarantine time is up. It'll be a couple of months in the least before they lay so I'm really excited about their eggs.

MDBucks, I paid for some of them but I think she was grateful for them to go together to a good home. I'm excited they're here!

Thank you for the compliments on the eggs.
I just love the color we get from them. We do get some lighter more speckled ones too, but we only set the darkest eggs and the color each generation just gets better and better. The birds are beautiful too. It is a perfect package bird...in my oppinion!
