Unfortunately, you can't tell whether the chick is male or female in the egg on your own... At least as far as I am aware of.

There is a new method in determining chickens' embryotic development that involves laser technology (the practice is called spectroscopy)... but this method is still being tested for health (of the animals and humans) and reliability... it also requires advanced machinery.
