Hi- I got this chickie in a banty mix from the ag store. It is very heavy and about 3 times bigger than the other chicks, and has very thick legs. It's black feathers have greenish metallic highlights and there are also mahogany brown and white highlights. The comb looks pea, though this chickie is 2 months old and maybe the comb will develop more.

The ag store guy tells me this may be a Java, but the coloring and comb don't look like that to me. I'm coming up with dark Cornish, though maybe it's something else? Anybody got any ideas?

Hey there Welcome to the BYC forums!!!! I have a bunch of family in Bemidji, MN! My moms and fathers families are from, and all over in, MN.

Also I am in agreement with Dark Cornish

haha... I'd have the darnedest time trying not to laugh at the ag guy that tried to sell me on it being a Java.

Dark Cornish for sure! Possibly a pullet, but it's hard to tell until they feather out more.

Thank you all for your expertise in confirming what I thought this chicken was! This thing is really bulking up, though foraging with the other banties and not sitting and chowing down at the feed like I heard Cornish do. I hope it's a pullet....

PS. to Chicken Obsessed....if any of your family in Bemidji have chickens and tips on helping the poor things survive the winters up here, could you get them in touch with me? I'm hoping this Cornish will be ok in my uninsulated coop with the other chickies.

I don't see much lacing in the feathers but she may be a little young yet, but dark cornish is in her maybe a bit of something else there to.
