Oh, it's a wonderful line. And I have gotten very nice show quality offspring from my flock. They have had the typical issues will you see with many of these birds when you are breeding. You don't ever get all 100% cookie, cutter, perfect birds. She did a very good job with her breeding program. I have had birds with typical BCM feather color faults such as red breasts and some spotting. I consider that to be one of the easiest things to work with. The birds are large, very healthy and hearty. I've never gotten a bird with a deformity or other serious problem
I saw her wheaten flock when I visited her. They were large, beautiful, and laid nice large eggs.

Pictures I got from him had the flock in a very muddy situation and were difficult to see the birds well because they were so dirty, I asked a ton of questions and he was mostly gracious about answering them but when he told me his property was flooded and couldn't take more pictures I asked it that was healthy for the birds, he replied, he had answered enough of my questions and was not going to sell them to me.....hmmmmm
fine with me
We live in Western Washington and our winters our mostly rain rain rain. The birds are in mud quite often although they do have dry coops. When it is not raining they will be out in the mud and they do fine and do not suffer health wise. I could bring in loads of sand which helps a lot but can't afford it right now. They have to take turns being let out to free range. Just with the rain it is stressful for me to get the birds though the winter, mostly because of extra cleaning in the coops and wanting the birds to have dry runs knowing it will be a while and I deal with it every year. I have lived in So Cali also and I can just imagine stress from a situation like flooding of property that Californians are not accustomed to. It almost never rains let alone flooding. Don't know what year that fellows place flooded but this winter is crazy! In San Diego the whole mall area in Mission Valley is flooded along with the freeway. Wonder how Sea World is fairing? There is a huge cement culvert that runs along the freeway out to the Ocean between the mall and the freeway. You would think it would drain quickly since it has the ocean to drain to. That's how much it is raining down there this year! Up here in WA we mostly get light rain that lasts for days without stopping. When it rains in Cali its POURS hard but usually doesn't last long. Sorry, I'm rambling. Blah Blah
Drom: I agree They have their faults but the good far outwiegh the bad in this line... It is a genetic pool for sure but there is some real merit in What Donna created... They are the healthiest line I have owned for my region. They are husky low riders with width and substance. They are pocket pets with personality plus. I do not sell the line...I am not a seller of eggs. There may be some on here with her Wheaton line. The BC has wheaton in them so it is possible to get wheaton from the line....I haven't had it as yet but I understand it occurs. You might try contacting SoCal marans and see when and if they are going to have birds available. Donna was careful who she sold to, it is my understanding. They may have stock available. I have so far been unable to confirm that. I hope you find a source of eggs that you are looking for. They are certainly top shelf.
Thanks for the kind words Wynette... you are right I do not carry wheaton...though I have been tempted by everyone's wheatie pix!!!

He has a small flock of Wheaten, Black Copper, and Golden Cuckoo for sale. All are from Donna. He is friends with her. Donna responded to an email from me about them. She said he has done a good job with the birds. He's selling them because he feels the Marans people he's had contact with have been less than friendly. Maybe that's the reason he was defensive to your comment Cheryl. The pens did look muddy (especially his youngin's pen), but we have had an awful lot of rain in No Cal, not sure if it's the same where you are.
From what I could see in the picture, the Wheaten were pretty. Most of those birds are between 2-3 years old. How long are Marans hens productive? The Black Coppers are around 18months. The Golden Cuckoo are less than a year. It would have been nice to see pictures of their eggs, but apparently they aren't laying right now.
I will say this... Know what you like... Know what you don't like.... If you can overlook some imperfections... be clear in your own head what that is... BHB has traits that are there... That is a fact... Know what those are...ask the breeder and then see if you can live with it...or even embrace that... Do I like them....NO!!!! I LOVE them
Would I order again from Donna... YEP!!! I tried to reach SoCal but they never answered me... I would continue to point ppl in that direction..... I like them..I know what they are and what they aren't... I can't say for everyone as we are all individuals... Good luck Harris5. I hope you get your dreambird!!!!
Just some silly questions from a lurker....
#1 Are "Black Marans" hard to find?
#2 Are GOOD "Black Marans" hard to find?
#3 Are the "Black" in "BBS Marans" not the same thing as "Black Marans"?
#4 Does question #3 even make sense?
Excellent questions... Yes there are black marans... yes they are very rare...No they are not the same. they are not the same as the coppers either... They are genetically a completely different bird.
