It's been said that the reason a lot of hatchery cuckoo marans don't lay very dark eggs, is because they've been outcrossed to BR's to improve their barred look. I was wondering though, what would happened if you crossed them with another dark egg breed (i.e. Welsummer, Penedesencas)? Are the dark egg genetics compatible between the different breeds?

I got some marans in my original hatchery special. They laid very dark eggs, but I gave them away. Don't care much for barred birds.

Which Hatchery did you use and got dark eggs. I ordered Cuckoo Marans from McMurray Hatcheries (5 st run, only 1 hen), and I'm now wondering if she will lay anything darker than a regular brown egg.

Has anyone else bought Cuckoo Marans from McMurray?
