Dark red skin in vent area

What does it mean when a chicken has deep red skin in the vent area?

Depends on breed.

Is she laying?

Has she been pecked?

Any sign of pests?

Other symptoms?

Some of the chickens with the red area were laying, some were not.

I saw some little buggies on some of them, and not on others, so I dusted everyone.

I will try to check and see if the redness has gone away.

None of my chickens have red butts since I dusted them all with sevin.
