Darkest Brown Egg Layers

Those are neat. I want some too. Now if I can find just one or two of those chicks for sale

I have room for one or two more. Hey maybe find a few eggs to let a broody hatch out in the spring!

Hello fellow dark egg fans!
We raise welsummers too! They are our only brown egg layer that we have. The eggs are beautiful, the chickens are beautiful, they are great foragers, generally non-aggressive, a medium breed, but still decent sized birds to butcher (extra roosters!) Here is a photo of some of our eggs that our oldest daughter took to the fair this year.

Welsumers and Marans.

Good birds, well breed with egg production and quality, lay dark eggs of different shades.

Someone pointed out already I think that the Maran has a more mahogany or reddish tint

While the Welsumers are more of a dark brown

The problem, as pointed out, is consistant color. I have only had hatchery welsumers and here is an example

The light ones are EE, the light brown one however was from a welsumer, as you can see out of 12 birds I got almost 12 different shades of brown.

Cynthia,
The girls are not laying too good right now, but I would be glad to fix you up in the spring or anytime thereafter!

We get some variation in egg color too, but we only ship and hatch the darkest eggs and eat the rest! They are all pretty though.
