My first 8 were rescues off the back of a truck beside the road on one of hottest days of the year...babys...newly hatched and had not had their first drink of water or scrap of food...the guy was tossing them around in a card board box like trash...I had to buy them...4 Rouens, 4 Pekins...they turned out to be mostly drakes so I ordered some girls for them...Pekins from Ideal...one of those turned into a drake and I ended up with 3 more drakes so the ratio is about right...I wanted to sell some because 25 ducks is a lot of ducks...I have had a few inquiries but no one has passed muster exactly...the last guy that wanted to buy some was going to EAT them! I know they are a food item in some places, but not mine...I sit out there with them evey day and recognize individuals even tho most of them wear the same outfit every day...they chatter, head bob, supervise everything I do and have definate opinion about what I am doing...I just can't stand the thought of someone lopping off their beautiful heads and eating them...those beady black eyes on on me all the time...I open the sliding glass door on the back deck to go outside and the chatter starts...they are waiting for me, watching the deck...they must think I am incredibly funny or something...and now they have started to lay...I am finding eggs all over the place even tho I have provided some nesting spots...it is an adventure to walk their yard...I even found and egg in the swimming pool...it is hilarious when they stand flat footed and try to jump up and grab leaves from the grapevine...they have no legs...I don't know who told them they could jump, or run for that matter...their antics chasing bugs turns me in to a laughing pool of jello on the ground...I love them...looks like I am going to be live entertainment for 25 ducks for a while...and that darn Fred the gander, he grabbed the peach trees in the duck yard and shook all the peaches out for the ducks...he did not want to eat them but he sure fed "his" ducks while they lasted...Fred stands guard over the ducks at night, he and his mate Wilma, with their buds Barney and Betty...they are all a total trip...
