Date On Bags Of Feed

I know this sounds stupid, but how do you read the date codes on bags of feed?

I have been buying 25 pounds of feed and I have been running out too soon for my budget. I just bought a 50-pound bag and there were worms in it.

I am not unfamiliar with this issue. I used to raise other types of birds, and no matter what I bough, I would always stick the bags it in the freezer for a day or two. That always took care of the critters in the seed.

I do not want to complain to the store. It is more of a pet store than a feed store. It s rare to find poultry feed so close to home and I do not want to alienate my source. I am sure the extra protein will not hurt the birds…but I now feel that the feed is compromised.

I also have a hard time moving a 50-pound bag by myself. Maybe I should get two 25-pound bags. They may be fresher. I just need to know how to read the dates. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

I always but from purena feed store, and they are so busy all the time so I know thier feed is fresh, but I never looked at the sell by dates.

Starter feed is very fragile and the exact date should be noted on the attached paper tag sewn onto the bag. You should return the wormy feed, but call the store because they may not want it back at the supply depot. Ask them their procedure for eliminating pests. Our feed mill uses food-grade diatomaceous earth to prevent infestations. If you are not satisfied by their answers try to procure your feed elsewhere. Toxins from insects and molds can be very dangerous to your livestock.
