DAY 0... / Hatching has begun!!

9 days ago I began my incubating journey, in just a few days lockdown begins! and guess who decided to join me in my hatching efforts!?!?!! Vladimir's Wife, Priscilla! She went into the nesting box yesterday morning to lay her egg in her usual spot and never came out! She is sitting on her clutch of 8 eggs and Ive only seen her out once, very early this morning to eat. I'm so happy she has finally gone broody! Especially because I know its somewhat rare for Button quails to hatch their own eggs! :D I'm so happy! Here is a pic of Priscilla! (getting in there for a pic made her stand but she is back to sitting happily :) )


 
3 more days till lockdown. I tried candling a few but all the eggs are dark in color and I couldn't see inside whatsoever, I guess I'll just have to wait and see! I candled a my other quails eggs and I could see a small dark spot floating around in there, now I know those are fertile so they are in the tray in a cooler space holding till my bator is freed up :)
 
I've come up with a simple way to turn my eggs all at once! An ice cube tray that makes the smaller cubes! LOL the eggs fit perfectly! Snug enough they don't roll around at all, deep enough that the tray can be tilted on its side and they won't fall out either :D To tilt the tray I've found a small soft toy basketball in my kids toy box that they never play with!! It's about the size of a hackey sack but squishy soft. I can stick it under one side to tilt the tray then just move it under the other side to tilt it the other way. I'll have to post a pic of it when I am ready to use it :)
 
dont forget pointy end up! lol good idea on helping to turn them. you can also add some bird seed in the cube if its a bit too deep.
 
I thought it was rounded end up!? Cuz the round end is where they make the pip and zip isn't it? I would remove them from the tray for lockdown, just laying them on their sides, since that's how they hatch in the wild :p
 
Well Good to hear Elizabeth! Hope ya get some more before its done! a cheap feather duster will help the little feel more secure till the others arrive. Id guess theres a whole lotta "peep'n" at your house now! Good luck, Bill
