So my barnyard mutt started laying on Sept 7. Every day, like clockwork, she would high-tail it back to the coop and go snuggle up in a nesting box until she emerged, triumphantly singing her egg song.

She did the same thing today. Went out to collect the egg but there was no egg to be found? I searched high and low but there was nothing.

Is this normal? I know they need to take a break now and then from laying, but do they still go through their routine and act like they laid an egg?

I just want to cover all possible bases before I have to lube up my finger....

Mine egg layer took a break twice. After laying steady for 7 days, she took a day break, then laid for another 6 days & took a day off.
She is on the nest now, am waiting for day #2 egg. But it is fine, she is my only egg layer right now, and she is regular like clock work.

Supposedly, they lay about every 25 or 26 hours, so they will gradually lay later and later -- then skip a day, and start over early in the day. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Odd thing was at one point last week she was regressing in her timing. She went from about 9am to 10am to 11am to 10am to 9am to 8am.

I just thought it was strange that she would do her whole routine including sitting on the nest for a bit before laying, come out singing her egg song, and there's nothing. She seems fine, her vent looks fine. I will definitely keep an eye on her, though.

We have a pullet who has laid for twelve straight days since she laid her first egg.

She seems healthy and happy as can be. Is there a record for straight egg-laying days?

Sounds like you have a good 'mutt', swampcat.
