Ok so I had a total of 24 eggs. 3 out of them had blood rings which I know are bad...but....when you get this far in the incubading process, what eggs are bad and how can you tell. I know I have alot of good ones which are moving and kicking and veins, but there is a couple that our questionable. This one egg just is a shadow and no veins and is only 1/2 shadowing the egg with no movement. Most of the others are 3/4 shadow and move and have veins. I am afraid I lost another one??????

This is my second hatching, so I am getting better at candling, but still have alot of questions. Please if anyone knows anything that would be great!

so excited!!

I had a bunch that were half shadow. What had happened is the york broke and it just became mush. I lost all of mine, except maybe one and I don't know how that one is doing since I can't see any movement, but then the whole egg almost is full. I'm on day 17 now.

Without seeing it, it's hard to say. If I have one that is very questionable at that stage, so close to moving to the hatcher, I would take a good whiff. If it isnt seeping and doesn't smell, I might go ahead and move it to the hatcher, but then again, if it looks very different from the ones you know are alive and well, then it probably has expired sometime in the recent last days. Movement in itself isn't what I go by because at that stage, the space is getting tighter, plus you may be candling when a chick is resting and not really moving much.

I second what Speckledhen said.....that late unless it just looks totally different and if it passes the sniff test I go ahead and leave it in....I always have this fear I'll toss a good one!

I do the same thing Cyn and Katy do...Always afraid I might toss a good one at that stage so I leave it unless it does not pass the sniff test...

Most of the time, I find the ones with dark blobs that don't move are bad, but I leave them in until I am absolutely certain there is no progression. If the eggs remain relatively clear, you can probably safely dispose of those.

Thank you all for posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am trying to not candle, but I am always so worried about them. I refuse to today though! I know it is mentally hard work trying to not put my face in the bator window. hehehe!

But, this is somthing else that is interesting. A couple of my eggs are 3/4 shadow with movement and only about 2-3 eggs are 1/2 shadow with movement. Does that mean some babies are older then others?????????
I got them from a farm so I dont know if the momma hen was sitting on any of them for a period of time.
Would that matter?

oh yea and I smelled that egg and it did not smell like anything......so i guess I will keep it in the bator along with the other one which is like that but has veins and kicking.

I did candle one other egg today and it is so big it is almost to the air pocket...bigger then the others!!!
I wonder if I am gonna have a hatch before day 21?!
