Still Air Temp 100.5 At The Top Of The Egg.... 105+ Is Lethal--- Big Question Is Did It Make It To 105 Inside The Egg? Undercooking (low Temps) Make For Later Hatches, Overcooking (high Temps ) Make For Early Birds.... Lots A Questions Swirling Around This Equation Arent There?

For The Record... Clear Does Not Mean Non Fertile... Especially With Shipped Eggs. It Certainly Means They Didnt Develop, But Fertility May Have Been There In The Beginning... Way Too Many Variables To Even Begin An Accurate Guess As To Why They Didnt Develop... You're At The Mercy Of So Many Things That Can Effect Development It Isnt Even Funny... If They Were Jostled Bad Enough To Break 3 The Clear Ones May Have Suffered Internal Rupture Of Membranes, God Only Knows How Long They Set Awaiting That Majic Number Of 25 (often Times The Small Batches Are Listed By Folks With Small Number Of Hens Who May Or May Not Collect Eggs For A Lengthy Time Period To Get The Desired Number)---- See? I've Just Scratched The Surface

Add To That Possible X Ray Exposure, Temp Extremes In Shipping, Even Your Lg...

I Use Several Hovabator Still Air Incubators For All My Hatching. For Hatching Still Air Cant Be Beat... For Incubating Forced Air Is More Desireable... Both Have Ups And Downs Or Pros And Cons.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to help. Unfortunately my hopes are not high. I inspected one today, and realized it was quite brittle, infact, my finger cracked it, which has never happened before, what I found inside was a fully formed, but dead quail.

It not the incubator for sure. It is my lack of experience at dealing with the temperature...keeping it steady. I seem to be fine, running it..stablizing it, UNTIL I put the eggs in, then I can not get it right. I wish there was a way to practice..without wasting precious eggs.

I will still hold out a couple more days of course. I have to.

Thank you, for all the info on incubators as well!! I appreciate it.

How's your cabinet incubator you made holding up?

I don't have a cabinet... I used a cooler.

Honestly I almost never see mine rocking, even when I do lay them on their sides for hatching. I wouldn't worry about it

A temp spike to 117 for an hour probably didn't hurt them as much as you think. It takes a lot longer for the insides of the egg to heat up.

Well... I was loathe to empty the incubator (I am at day 21), but a storm last night caused our power to go out till this morning, and kind of made the decision for me. I am not going to bother opening the eggs, as I know most made it right up till day 17 and were fully formed. It'll be too heart breaking. Still not sure exactly what happened, because there were so many variables involved. I very much appreciate the help with the incubator, ie. insulating it to maintain more constant temp, additional thermostat etc.

My current quail, (I thought 3 girls and a boy...but uh oh...I think I may have 2 boys and 2 girls, will post pictures in another post later today, and hope for help indentifying them!) are only 4 weeks old, so I will have to wait a bit for eggs (Okay...i know i do not have to wait toooo long, but when you're anxious...it seeeeems long!)...and if my ratio isn't right...*sigh... but I am too nervous to buy more eggs after my last two experiences...plus I do not want to keep messing up with the incubator and ruining these poor eggs/babies.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. There WILL be another setting, eventually...and hopefully much better results.

We learn from our mistakes and incubators can be a pain at times. But don't give up, give some other eggs a chance :0)
