I’m on day 18 and all 4/4 eggs have just been candled and put into lockdown! When candling them the chick was very lively and moving around a lot, almost looked ready to break out. Does this mean it might hatch earlier than day 21, should I set up the brooder properly now?

Yes, its always good to get a headstart on the brooder even At day 15, i do Not recommend candeling at day 18, its very bad for them. From my experince atleast. Try not to candle anymore, it could hurt them. It still keans theywill probsbly hatch at 21, as your not supposed to candle at day 18. so they will be lively.

Oh ok, thanks for your advice as I had no idea about this. I won’t be candling anymore. Can’t wait for them to hatch now😁

Most people do candle before lockdown and remove any bad eggs, it doesn't hurt eggs at all. You can candle at any time, just after lockdown you want to try to place egg back in incubator in same position it was in before candling. As to not disturb positioning of hatchling. What you did was fine you are just locking them down so they have plenty of time to position for hatching. What you would be looking for when candling is for internal pips. That is when you see beak or head in air cell you want to be in lockdown at that time. Then they will external pip breaking small hole in egg to breath and will remain like that until it absorbs all of its yolk. This can take up to 24hrs or so then they will zip out of egg and be fully hatched. Never a bad idea to set up brooder ahead of time and giving it a test getting temps adjusted so you are not experimenting when you need to be using it.

The reason people dont though, is because this time it is very fragile, you have to be exact, if you shake the egg or something it ruins it, and it’s often to delicate to mess with. Often people do not do it at the time, so i was making sure they knew that after that they shouldnt.

Don't believe you have to be any more delicate candling eggs at day 18 as you need to be any other time during incubation.

If this was the case you wouldn't be able to move eggs from incubator to remove egg turners and replace eggs back into incubator for lockdown if they are that fragile at at day 18. Not sure where you are getting that info. I incubate in 1 incubator and hatch/lockdown in a 2nd one and move eggs at lockdown into 2nd incubator and candle whatever day that is for what I'm hatching with no ill affects
