On day 20 of incubating 7 cort quail eggs
we honestly had given up on them after day 18, but noticed on one egg a very small piece of eggshell missing. Now 30 hours later, there’s a small beak poking through trying to get out. The firs’pip’ we noticed thirty hours ago was not a Hole into the egg but simply a small piece of shell missing. Should we be concerned? My friend opened the incubator at one point to change water for humidity and that’s when he noticed it had broken through the shell and was peeping. Could this have caused the membrane to shrink? And does the initial missing fragment count as the start of the pip to hatch transition? I will attach photo of original small fracture we noticed.

It just failed to peirce the outer membrane is all. If the membrane is a bit dry, you can take a tooth pick, & make the hole in the membrane for the chick to breath through. I do this for my chicken eggs if they require it.

No, opening the incubator for a minute, or two won't shrink wrap your chicks.
