You didn't kill it. And by the way I go in as needed. However rather than spray the egg to soften it, if you see dried white exposed membrane and the chick appears stuck, just soften the exposed parts with coconut oil

After my broody came off the nest with 4 chicks I placed the eggs in the incubator to candle later and got the broody and chicks settled in. When I got back and candled the eggs I found 1 of the eggs had a tiny hole in it and the chick was trying to hatch (none of the other eggs were any good).I ended up staying up all night with that chick and momma with her other 4.I'm glad none of the other eggs were any good because I'm not sure she would taken any later.Her 1st chick hatched 48+ hrs earlier than the one hatched in the incubator.

Did she accept the incu baby and raise it with the rest?

True story from earlier this summer:
I took five eggs out of a nest my latest broody abandoned and ... ummm ... christened with a dramatic "I'm Done" poo. I set them on an upturned bucket next to her hutch (I use rabbit hutches for breeding pairs and broodies,) meaning to toss them "in a minute."

Well, "Look, a butterfly" struck again and I forgot about them until I went to feed the next day. I followed some peeping I heard, thinking I had an escapee ... and found one of the "dead" egglets fully pipped. I candled the rest but they were quitters. Three weeks later, the same thing happened! Apparently this summer's heat was too much for lengthy hatching sessions (and probably the reason why the eggs continued developing!) Regardless, I now have a lovely pair of surprise pullets from eggs I almost tossed!

Edit to add: My incubator was waiting for a part, so I had nowhere to finish, so I had to get creative. Hint: The older youngster is named "Boo-Bee. Her Little sister is LaBuBu!

Lucky is doing great! She got her brace off earlier today and is walking, eating, and drinking perfectly! Here she is in the brooder (right) with Lint Ball (left).

Here's little Lucky. Lint Ball was pecking her very aggressively. We tried everything but Lint Ball would not stop bullying Lucky so we separated them with a mesh wall. They are touching beaks through the mesh. We will be going to Murdoch's next week and picking up some chicks that are both Lucky and Lint Ball's age.

It doesn't look like they have any way to get away from the heat lamp.
What is the temperature in that container?

Is it possible to raise the lamp so that it is only heating half of the container?

It is heating only half of the container, and the temperature is at a steady 95 degrees.

She's an A1 momma!I slid it under her the same evening and she's taken care of it ever since. Even the other chicks were gentle with it. She took them all outside to sunbathe today. It'll be 2 weeks old Saturday.

My chickens were making a racket and the rooster crowing so I went out to see if something was harassing them and found the chicks taking flying lessons.One was sitting on a cross bar in the middle of the door 3 ft off the floor

The heat bearing down on them is trapped .No air movement with sides. No cool air.They need both.Totes can be very dangerous.Just saying...You're a good chicky mom no worries.We have faith in you.
