We are on day 20 incubating our first ever batch of chicken eggs.. (olive egger, cream legbar and blue laced red Wyandotte's) and they are currently in lockdown in a little giant still air incubator.

The humidity is at 71% . Do you think it should be higher and what should we do and when? I have two wet sponges, and the water troughs are full below the eggs but you have to open the lid to add water and I read definitely don't open the lid.

Do they always peep or wiggle this close to hatch or does it just depend on the peep etc?

Any other suggestions or comments welcome.

So excited and anxious and impatient!

ahhh this is so exciting. I hope everything goes well for you. I have had good luck with 65% to 75% humidity on lockdown. I think what is more important though is the humidity during the duration of the entire incubation as that can severely affect the development of the chick and the air sac. The higher humidity at the end is just to assist in hatching. If you think about a mother hen though it is not like suddenly she sweats more causing more humidity on the last few days haha. So this is something that helps, but not something that I would worry about being extremely exact on.

I would not risk opening the lid unless the humidity dropped way down.

Depending on how constant the temp was will determine how soon they start to pip. Also, the time that you set your eggs and started on Day 1 will make a difference. You can see pips on Day 20 sometimes but most likely won't be until tomorrow.

Good luck!!

Oh very true. Thank you so much! I appreciate it.
We tried to keep the heat close to 100.5 the whole time. And we put them in at 5pm on the first day so I figured closer to 5pm tomorrow (day 21) is when they will hatch. Hopefully!

Thanks for the reassurance!

Thanks so much. We have our first crack! We saw eggs wiggle and heard peeps this morning and I think last night! Then one started to pip this morning at 7:30 ish!
