I'm new to hatching eggs and today, July 30, is the day my chicks are suppose to hatch. My hen became broody at about 7:30 PM three weeks ago. Does that mean the chicks will hatch at in the evening or at night? Or not until tomorow? HELP! What signs on the eggs do I look for?

Well, I was told that you start counting day 1 if it is early morning. But if it was afternoon when the incubation starts, then you count the next day as day 1.

The best way is to walk into the coop and see if there's little fluffy chicks under/around mama! I came home today, and of my broody hen, 3 had hatched this evening and were dry and fluffy. 2 had fallen out of the nest box- or went exploring, and another was hiding under mama. All 3 of them are in my brooder box now. Mama still has 1 egg left she's incubating. What a good hatcher! Today was my day 21 and I had most of the eggs in the incubator, then 4 days ago, this persistent little bantam cochin got her wish, and I gave her 4 eggs to 'finish' for me to see how she did. So far 3 of 4 have hatched. Good job little cochin!

But with my ones in the incubator, you see the moving eggs first, then some cheeping, then you see a tiny little dent/hole in the egg and maybe a little beak. Then it takes anywhere from 12 to 24 hours in my last few hatches for them to get out!

Good luck!

Thank you all, you've helped so much. Mikenandrea, if you're right, then I'm guessing tomorow will be when they hatch, because like I said, she didn't start until the evening. So far, I didn't see anything going on on the outside of the egg, but maybe tonight or tomorow I will. I hope the eggs will hatch.

My broody's are due on Saturday and just this evening I put one egg to my ear VERY closely and could hear a tap tap peeppeep! Of course, I couldn't hear anything in another one.
Time will tell.
