Day 22 - sad, sad day - any help for a newbie?

Hey that's cool!
My candler is homemade too but not nearly as fancy...
I have a flashlight with four layers of thick foil duct taped over the lens with an appropriate sized hole (about 1/2 inch) in the foil. It works well and I can change the foil and hole size according to the egg size (I hatch quail too).
You can buy a commercial candler ... they are suppose to be great.

Sgray! That is fabulous!

Please start a new thread with the how to for the candler so it can be found easily. Can you give us a few more photos?

Please please please!

Here's a question:

Is there another reason to candle than just to eliminate non-growing chicks?

I admit it would have been nice to know 18 days ago that the eggs weren't working but is it "necessary"?

Dipsy Doodle Doo is close to you, I believe! And she has AWESOME silkie, frizzle, and ameracauna eggs. Look under Breeders and Backyard Hatcheries, the BYC Breeders is the best place to look!!

Ya! That candler is cool... And if my addiction continues to increase I might need one like it!

On the breed thing... It was suggested to me "Orpington". I have never had any but allot of family on this site does and they love 'em!

Most of us who hatch candle usually at day 7 , 14 and 18. Not just to eliminate the eggs not developing but when you candle with good light and a pitch black room you can see the chick moving around, living, jumping, quivering inside the egg. It is an amazing thing to see!

Yaay, another Carolinian! I like my Barred Rocks for egg production (large brown eggs) and mellow temperament, plus they are awful purty, too

If you are close enough, you can come by and pick up some eggs to hatch
