I may have been the one to post about floating eggs. We did it all the time when I was a youngster. If they sink, they are either fresh. Usually after incubating for a few weeks they will all float, good and bad. Just float them in warm water and if they are alive, they will be wiggling all over in the water. You can really see them if it is close to hatching time.
About hearing something, I remember having an egg that I swear was peeping. I tried the float test and it didn't move. It was on 24 or 25 days so I thought I'd try to help by putting a small hole in it. IT WAS ROTTEN! I don't know if it was gas leaking out that sounded like cheeping or what but it you try to open one, do it outside.
