Wondering if you have any advice...Ok so I know the general rule is to not assist hatch. But I wonder if I should make a safety hole in the top of the shell after the chick internally pipped but not externally pipped. She's been internally pipped for at least 24 hours under my broody hen. This particular egg I really want to hatch, but idk if I should intervene or not. How long can they be internally pipped before they run out of air? She was peeping yesterday afternoon, but not hearing her today. Other chick that was also peeping yesterday has already hatchedCongratulations!!!! View attachment 2112722

Thank you! I did end up making a tiny safety hole just now and as soon as I did, I could hear it tapping inside. Hoping it will hatch on its own soonEveryone has a different philosophy so there is no "right answer" here. It's your flock, you need to do what you think is right. Me personally, if I know conditions have been right- I will assist on Day 24 or Day 23 if I have a specific reason to do so. If the incubation has not been consistent or they're under a broody and not in my brooder- I rarely assist because I have to leave the best judgement to mama hen. Usually I only assist a broody when I am concerned about the broody not giving up on an egg when she has other chicks.
So you need to find your comfort zone and do what you think is best! It is OK to assist when you have a reason to.

Sounds like you did the right thing. I always put safety holes in my favorite eggs. If you don't mind me asking, I'm just curious, why do you want this particular egg to hatch?Thank you!
